SUSTAINABILITY

The impact of the fashion industry on people and the planet has become an important topic in recent history. Sustainable, ethical, local and organic brands and products are gaining ground in the industry and we at Fashion Exposed Now are supporting this change.

Fashion Industry at a glance

The Global Fashion Industry is recognized as being one of the biggest polluters of our planet. It’s use of water, energy and chemicals have a huge and lasting impact on the environment.

It is estimated that more than 90 million tonnes of waste are generated each year in its supply chains and end use, with landfills being inundated with textile waste which cannot be recycled. It is estimated that Australians throw away 6000 kg of fashion and textile waste every 10 minutes.

Around 50 million people work in the fashion industry worldwide, it is a vibrant and exciting industry but is also notorious for exploiting workers and damaging communities and the environment.

80% of the work force estimated to be women many of whom are vulnerable and are subjected to low wages, unsafe conditions and harassment. In many cases people are paid less than half the amount considered to be a living wage, and instances of forced labour and exploitation are widespread.

At Fashion Exposed Now, we want to be part of that change. We recognise that we have impacts too and we are at the beginning of our journey to become more sustainable by reducing the impacts of our own operations. For example, we reuse our stand components, we won’t be giving out show bags and will use paper bags and recyclable packaging where we can. We realise you probably don’t need that free plastic pen, so we’d rather not waste valuable resources in producing them. We have made our commitment to sustainability and we have looked at the impacts we have as we run our exhibition for fashion retailers in Australia and here are some of the things we are considering whilst we run the event.
